The 4 Main Reasons for Imperialism
- The first reason for imperialism was that imperialism had to with money,
Europeans wanted the colonies to provide raw materials for their factories, and
afterwards, they wanted to sell their goods to their new colonies. - The second reason for imperialism was national pride. Nations wanted to show that they had national strength, and were better than the rest.
- The third reason was racism. Europeans believed that white was the superior race overall. Racism was related to Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism was the use of the idea of Charles Darwin's theory for evolution to explain for human societies. One of the ideas were "survival of the fittest". This was the belief that the strongest, or fittest, species would be more likely to survive.
- The last and final reason for imperialism was Christianity. Christian missionaries supported imperialism,and they thought that the Europeans rule might end the slave trade. Missionaries wanted to convert people from all over the world to Christianity .
The United States wanted to colonize weaker countries, including Hawaii, because the U.S believed they had a destiny to fulfill of becoming the world power. The United States wanted to colonize Hawaii because in the 1820's, the sugar trade in Hawaii began to change its economy. American business owners established the sugar cane plantation . Hawaii had the sugar cane plantation, which is one resource that the United States wanted.
